Conor McGregor’s in-ring display against Floyd Mayweather has been criticized after he made dismissive comments about YouTube boxing.
Notorious became the first dual-weight champion in UFC history in 2016 and subsequently crossed over into a new sport to take on boxing legend Floyd Mayweather.
McGregor started well in what was his boxing debut but ultimately faded and was outclassed before being stopped by Mayweather in round ten.
The 34-year-old is believed to have made $100 million for the fight that remains one of the best-selling combat sports pay-per-view events of all time.
It was such a successful event that more and more non-boxers started crossing over into the sport in search of big paydays.
Logan Paul, Jake Paul, KSI and Deji spearheaded a new genre of boxing often tagged as ‘YouTube boxing’ due to their background on the video-sharing platform.
Even Mayweather has gotten involved. While McGregor returned to MMA after their fight, he retired and has been taking exhibition fights against internet celebrities and other mismatched opponents ever since.
In June 2021, ‘The Maverick’ went eight rounds with Mayweather but no winner was declared due to the nature of the bout at the Hard Rock Stadium in Miami.
Just last month, ‘The Best Ever’ stopped Deji in six rounds at the Coca-Cola Arena in Dubai – it was his fifth exhibition bout since retiring from pro boxing with a 50-0 record.
On January 14, one of McGregor’s training partners, Dillon Danis, is set to make his boxing debut against KSI. While the Irishman insists he is backing his pal ‘all the way’, he has no interest in the fight itself.
He tweeted: “I don’t care. He should be back doing mma if he is doing this little nothing burger match with you [KSI].
“I couldn’t care less about this genre of boxing, I am sorry. Have a good one.”
Paul took McGregor’s words to heart as he claimed to have put up a better performance against Mayweather.
He replied: “Genre of boxing” ?? Boxing is boxing. I’m a YouTuber & I still did more damage to Floyd than you”
Deji, who lost three of his four prior boxing bouts before being matched with Mayweather, believes he did more damage than McGregor despite getting stopped much quicker by the aging legend.
He added: “I gave Floyd Mayweather a black eye, did you?”
McGregor’s lack of interest in the world of YouTube boxing could be due to the fact he is currently gearing up for what he claims will be the best comeback in sporting history.
Mystic Mac hasn’t fought since suffering a fractured tibia and fibula at UFC 264 in July 2021 but is now fully healed ahead of his 2023 return to action.
McGregor has seriously bulked up during his injury layoff in the hopes of becoming the first three-weight champion in UFC history by winning the welterweight title currently held by Leon Edwards.
